Cancer: Be Aware

Okay, I want to talk about the topic of cancer awareness. Most of you have probably had cancer touch your lives one way or another, right? Whether you, or a friend, significant other, family member,or a co-worker had cancer… The possibilities are endless of how cancer may have touched your life. Cancer has touched my life in different ways too, my grandfather has beaten cancer several times, my grandmother died from bone cancer, my uncle had skin cancer, and my friend’s mom is battling cancer now. The first time it knowingly affected me before I knew much about it was in middle school. There was a boy, Garnet, who I never met that fought leukemia and lost. I had just moved to town and I sat at his desk because it was the only one open. When the teachers told us he passed away, even though I didn’t know him, it made a mark in my life that I will always remember. It affected me.

The mind boggling thing is that there are so many types of cancer, but we mostly only hear about one. Breast cancer. The awareness for breast cancer is amazing! Seriously, it is not a bad thing at all. I LOVE that there is so much awareness for Breast cancer, there is an awareness month in October, people wear pink to show their support, there are fundraisers, marathons and all kinds of stuff that is well advertised, but my only issue is, why not for other cancers? Why can’t we turn the world all the other colors out there to show support for the other cancers that brave people are battling every day? Yes, there are marathons for some of them, and fundraisers, but they aren’t widely known about compared to when it is about Breast Cancer. We should change that, we should take the time to spread the word about other types of cancers people are facing and wear those colors too. Only we can make a difference. A difference was made for breast cancer, now let’s do it for all of the others! Most people are aware that October is breast cancer awareness month, but the other awareness months come and go and most don’t even know it. I honestly don’t usually realize it. I rarely see posts on social media, or anywhere else for that matter, for other awareness months. When I did a search on cancer awareness, breast cancer and pink ribbons were the top results. Go breast cancer! You are doing something right!

I have been watching a new ABC Family show called Chasing Life, which follows a young girl in her twenties who is diagnosed with leukemia. It is the first show like it that I have seen and it is refreshing. The first time I saw it advertised, I knew I had to watch it, and now the summer finale is around the corner and I’m emotionally invested. It is a really great show and I love that it is out there and I hope it will bring more awareness.

I have been intrigued by cancer since a young age, which probably sounds weird. I think part of that intrigue is the amazing strong people that go through it and fight the illness. Cancer is complex and different for each person, which is interesting in itself, but I would like to see the day that there is a cure for all cancers, and to do that, I think we need to make more noise and spread awareness for them all. I compiled a list of cancers, their awareness months, and colors below, I didn’t get them all, I know, but I did my best for this post. Feel free to comment if you notice one missing and I will add it! I would also love to hear others thoughts on this! Sorry if I kind of rambled and my thoughts were a little all over the place!

I Persevere

This game you play
Is very dangerous.
Like jumping out of a plane and
Forgetting your parachute.

You act innocent,
Like an angel from above.
Pure and fragile.
Your act only works on a crowd,
I’m not part of it.
I see you for who you are.
Stripping away your white mask
That fools everyone else.
Revealing the darkness underneath.
Not appreciative of what you already have
You steal from others.
Acting like you’re their friend
Before flipping the switch.

You start a war.
When I’m winning
You retreat.
Finding higher authority
Hiding behind them
Like I’m the one
Who committed treason
Stabbing one of my own.
You can try to frame me
But the truth will come out,
As soon as they find your fingerprints.

You didn’t expect me to fight back
When you first attacked.
Thinking it was easy to bring me down.
Sorry to disappoint you
I’m not defeated, just like that.
Don’t break a nail
Leave the scratching to a cat.
I don’t pull hair, a powerless act.
I connect my fist with your face
Enjoying the feeling of first to jaw
As blood splashes on my skin.

You may have begun this war
Trying to take advantage of me.
Fighting dirty.
Despair will only fall on you.
I will finish first
Every time.
I fight for victory
Never backing down.
The strength I have will shock you.

Think again before throwing punches my way.
I will dodge every one.
Your energy will be wasted
You will only be defeated.

If you choose to fight anyways
Finish what you started.
You can’t retreat and hide
Just because you are losing.
In the end I will find you,
Making you compensate
For all you have done.

The plane couldn’t save you.
I watch you fall through the air.
Eventually your body will crash to the ground,
With nothing there to stop you
But the branches scraping across your skin.

Causing you every bit of pain
You inflicted on me.
As your body is sprawled out on the ground
I hope you suffer.
Remembering you caused this
All because you played dangerously
You didn’t have a parachute.
You have nothing left,
I persevere.

Okay, so I’ve heard other writers talk about how they get these awesome ideas when they are trying to sleep. I never really had that problem, until last night. I had a long day. I mean it was a Monday of all Mondays! I was ready to just pass out, but nope. I’m just laying there working on drifting off into la-la land when my characters take over my mind, and have a vivid scene in my head. I couldn’t get up and start writing because I NEEDED to go to sleep, but the image just wouldn’t leave me alone until it played it out in my head. WHYYYYY! I sit at the computer all day and haven’t done a whole lot of writing, but when I can’t write, I have a scene jumping and creaming, “look at me, look at me” in my head? *head desk* The even better part is, the said scene is for the third book in the Rain  series, when I should be working on the second book… SIGH. I guess I should just go with it, so now I’m going to try to get the scene written down, and hopefully it comes out as good as what was in my head last night.

Happy Writing!

Hey everyone! Today I am excited to be a part of the blog tour for a fellow author and blogger, Keren Hughes! There are a lot of goodies in this post, so stick around and make sure to enter her giveaway at the end! Nothing Like the First Time is Keren’s first New Adult book about the power of first love and the steam that comes with it. Thank you for having me on the tour Keren!
Guest Post:
Keren’s Favorite Book Boyfriends.
Honestly, this is a hard topic to discuss. I feel like I don’t know what to say and yet I could talk forever about the loves that I have encountered in the book world.
My first love was Dimitri Belikov. He is the epitome of raw sexiness. I read Vampire Academy some years ago and I absolutely fell head over heels for Dimka. He is the reason I got so sucked into reading.
To name other book boyfriends though? Well, there’s Christian Grey, Sergei Salkov (Queen of Someday by Sherry Ficklin), Luke Carter (Starting Over by Evan Grace), Marc Romano (Falling To Pieces by LT Kelly) these are just a few of my most recent loves.
Some of my older loves are Valek (Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder), Doyle, Frost and Mistral (Merry Gentry series by Laurell K Hamilton.
I have very eclectic tastes in books and I give my heart away to so many men. But my favourite book love of all has to be Greyston Sterling. He’s my main character in Nothing Like The first Time. I love him with all my heart and soul. Why? Well it’s a long story but to cut a long story short; Grey is a composite of several of my exes but mostly he is modelled after my own first love, Mark.
I was 18 when I met Mark and he was by far the most amazing man I had ever met. Though things didn’t work out between us and he is now married with a child, he is still my best friend and there is still a little piece of my heart lost to him, a piece that would take him back if he was single.
So Grey was a hard guy to write but also easy. That might not make much sense to you, but it’s true nonetheless. I made him the kind of guy that Mark is, with a touch of other exes here and there for good measure—certain elements of the book are real life events that happened to me—and I made the story something like how I wished Mark and I could have turned out.
Nothing Like the First Time
By: Keren Hughes
Limitless Publishing
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
Released: May 20th, 2014

Synopsis:

Carly Summers and Greyston Sterling were each other’s first kiss, first sexual experience, first love, first everything…

They were a match made in Heaven, that was, until Grey took a job as a freelance photographer which took him to the other side of the world. When it came down to a choice between his career and his girl – he chose his career.

Now, 10 years later, Grey’s back in town and wants to see if they can rekindle what they had all those years ago. Carly has had relationships but nothing that lasted. No one ever compared to Grey.

But how can they if he’s engaged to somebody else?

Book Trailer:

Excerpt:

“So
your career comes before me?” I asked, already knowing the answer. “At least
look me in the eye and answer me, it’s the least you owe me Grey.”
“I
don’t want to have to choose Carls,” he said as he caught my eye. “I just don’t
want to miss out on the experience of a lifetime. I get to see amazing things,
capture them on film while I experience the different cultures.”
“Just
answer the question Grey – you want your career more than you want me.” I
started to cry again, I had wanted to get through this without crying but I was
fooling myself when I thought that.

“I’m
sorry Carls,” he said as he took my hand into his. “I love you, I always will.
But this is the opportunity of a lifetime, it may never happen again. I need to
do this. I’m not making a conscious choice to put you second but if you weren’t
so stubborn, you’d come with me like I asked.”

About the Author:

Keren lives in the UK and is an avid bookworm; she has been since she read things like Black Beauty, What Katy Did and The Hobbit as a child. Her first real memories of reading are the summers she used to lie on her bed and re-read What Katy Did and What Katy Did Next.

Over the years she has come to realise that she is a bit OCD about books. They have to be in perfect condition without the slightest bit of damage.

She is a book reviewer and has been for the past 18 months or so.

The idea for Stolen came to her one day but she never thought she’d actually write it let alone publish it. If it wasn’t for her author friend Kira Saito, the idea would still be stuck in her head not on paper. But constant love and support from Kira is why you are now able to read Stolen.

Stolen is her first novel but now that she’s written one, she knows she needs to write more. There will be one sequel, called Freed which will be from Bodhi’s POV. This will be set a couple of years on.

Then, the plan is for her to write either NA or Adult Contemporary Romances. She has a big crush on Lady Antebellum’s music at the moment and their songs have inspired a few book ideas.

Hi Everyone!

I just submitted a video of myself “performing” my slam poem Beauty Defined for the Stop the Beauty Madness ad campaign poetry contest. The campaign says, “Enough of the impossible standards. Enough of the “ideal” image. Most of all, enough of the feeling of NOT ENOUGH when it comes to your own beauty.” This is just a small excerpt, be sure to visit their website and see what they are all about in detail! It is pretty amazing stuff!

Making a video was very difficult for me and I was way out of my comfort zone. I HATE being recorded. I feel very strongly about the subject matter though, so I sucked it up, put my brave pants on, and made the video. It took me a long time to get a good one, my first attempts were not pretty, like I said, being recorded is not my thing. I’m really proud of myself though, and I hope my video will inspire others, if not, that is okay too. I’m glad I did it. I thought I would share the poem and video! You can find them below. I would love to hear your thoughts if you would like to leave a comment.

I hope everyone has a fabulous Sunday!

Beauty Defined

I live in a world

Where beauty is defined by words like

TALL, SKINNY, THIN, FLAWLESS…

Where beauty is not being NORMAL

For MY OWN body type.

I must fit into a body type that only a very small percentage of the population possesses.

In middle school I was asked if I was anorexic because I was THIN.

The shocking words coming from people so young,

Because that had become a NORM in our world.

Now I’m twenty-five and am no longer super thin,

I’ve gained weight and have meat and curves on my BODY,

Which makes me feel self-conscious in my own SKIN.

I’m surrounded by ads telling me what I NEED to be BEAUTIFUL.

SHINY HAIR, Makeup to cover my FLAWS, acne treatment to get rid of my BLEMISHES, and WEIGHT LOSS                 pills.

They LEAVE OUT how these products will affect my HEALTH long-term,

Or even my SELF-ESTEEM.

I remember being embarrassed growing up,

Because I didn’t have the COOL name brand clothing others had.

All I wanted to do was fit in,

But now I know it is far better to STAND OUT.

Ads depict the PERFECT WOMAN; who has been Photo shopped so she isn’t even REAL,

But I’m made to BELIEVE I should look like that,

Instead of all five-feet one hundred and twenty pounds of myself.

I have been taught by the media,

That it is not okay to look like I do.

It is not beautiful to have PORES,

Or scars that tell stories.

The media has created a SICKNESS.

A DISEASE,

That has turned into a WIDE-SPREAD epidemic.

We need to STOP THE BEAUTY MADNESS,

Before it is TOO LATE.

Stop labeling people,

Because being DIFFERENT is what makes each of us beautiful.

My appearance doesn’t make me who I am,

My CHARACTER, PASSIONS and INTERESTS do.

Don’t DEFINE me by what I look like,

But instead by what I do.

I’m a WRITER, ARTIST, WIFE, POET, FRIEND, ARCHER, SOCCER-PLAYER, MUSIC LOVER…

It is time to TEACH our children to be comfortable in their own skin,

Encourage being HEALTHY,

instead of setting unrealistic standards,

So people resort to becoming ANOREXIC or BULIMIC,

Just to be SKINNY.

Revel in the beauty of FLAWS,

Instead of getting plastic surgery for SOMEONE ELSE’S idea of beauty.

When we give into these ideals we are losing pieces of ourselves,

And eventually there won’t be anything Left.

I don’t know about you,

But I don’t want to be a BARBIE,

I just want to be MYSELF.
